HOW OUR PE CLASS DIFFERS

Variety of Activities

We like to expose the students many different games that go beyond just sports and exercise.  We also modify games in ways to level the playing field so that everyone has a fair opportunity to succeed rather than just a small group of the class.

Variety of Methods

Most people experience PE through a philosophy known as Sport Education.  While it is useful, I also like to employ other philosophies such as Adventure Education and Teaching Games for Understanding.  Different methods allow us to focus on teamwork and understanding of play while remaining active.  More kids are active participants when they work and learn together instead of constantly feeling like they're competing.

Focus on Individual Growth
It is not about celebrating who is the best, it is about celebrating who has improved.  Ideally, this should include everyone.  Maybe you can't do the most pull-ups or run the fastest mile, but are you better than you were when we started?  The only thing we worry about in class is doing better than ourselves!

My Philosophy

I believe that it is important for students to learn how to be active and healthy in a way that will help them continue to live that way throughout their lives.  I also believe that it is important to choose activities that everyone can fairly participate in. If PE can be more enjoyable for each student, they are more likely to continue to search out programs they enjoy and remain active beyond their elementary years.
